  1. Being a Good Husband and Father Is Paradise - "You take the three kids upstairs to play while wife rests. Your boy accidentally smacks your crotch with a toy sword. Your girl asks you to braid her hair six different ways. Baby blows out his diaper. Then, it’s bedtime. Your wife waited for you during the years of 90 hour weeks. She gave up her successful marketing career to raise your first two kids. She was thrilled when you finally decided to pursue better work life balance. She held everything together for the big move and a surprise pregnancy. Now she’s feeding your baby to sleep. You will never understand why she picked you..."

  2. PE VP: Q&A for On-Cycle Recruiting - "First reason I'm doing this: I wish this existed when I was going through recruiting. Second reason I'm doing this: Too many people are going on-cycle who don't actually want to do PE or going into it without enough information. I'm here to answer questions to hopefully limit that this cycle. Background: banking, PE, business school, PE."

Top Discussions (contd.)

  1. Need Help on Transitioning Out of EB IB to Rx Consulting - "As for the transition itself: you're in RX IB, and the transition, (especially at PJT RSSG / EVR RX — both top-tier and highly respected) into RX consulting is 100% doable, but it’s not a tap-in. Gonna be totally honest, I didn't have a PJT / EVR guy trying to move into RX co. post on my bingo card. To elaborate on it not being a total tap in: you’re coming from a pure execution background where you're deep in the modeling trenches, but RX consulting is also heavy on driving strategic recommendations, operating under limited info, and navigating messy stakeholder dynamics (creditors, management, legal, etc). The skillsets overlap, but the lenses are different, banking focuses on valuation/outcomes; consulting focuses on diagnostics and process. You're trying to get into creditor side rather than debtor, and since creditor is the more technical side, the jump should be easier than making the jump to debtor side..."

  2. Picking Spouses as a Banker - "I've dated both. I found dating other bankers or lawyers tough. Not only on calendars but also on joint stress levels. I'm now married to someone from a more relaxed career who gas effectively gone part time to support our family growth. Both can work, I've seen plenty of power couples for example. But I don't want my kids brought up by a nanny, so I changed my criteria to find someone who was open to being a home maker."

  3. What’s Actually the Crossover Point for Picking a $1BN Fund Over a MF as a Career-Track Midlevel? - "The truth is that a Partner takes in a single fund more carry than you would’ve been allocated all the way to Partner cumulative (or at least it won’t be far off), and at the Partner level this meaningfully scales by size of fund typically as the Partners take whatever is left after paying the rest of us ‘market comp’. Also obviously relevant if you want to get the mgmt fee economics at some point. All that said - there have been a few rocket ships and if you were on one you will have had a great ride. But it’s impossible to know which one these will be over the next 10 years and the ones which obviously are today no longer are that same opportunity. So long story short, take the ‘best’ offer you can get and downsize until you hit Partner."

  4. Feeling Lost After Being Pushed Out - "You have to separate your ego and sense of self worth from work. It’s not a meritocracy or a reflection on who you are as a person. At one fund you could click with everyone and be partner track, at another you’re bottom bucket with the same performance. It’s an old boys club where performing at a high level is a baseline expectation and the differentiator for career growth is almost exclusively politics and perception. Given that paradigm, I would encourage you to spend less time optimizing for getting a good grade in life (high school and college is over and you don’t have a GPA or report card for adult life) and more time focusing on getting what you want (money, flexibility, interesting work, etc). No one outside the walls of your firm gives a single shit what your job is, what your title is, or if you’re top bucket or bottom bucket. They care about the person you are and life you are living outside of work, so optimize for that instead."
