  1. The Brutality of Working at a Multi-Manager Hedge Fund - "If a PM has covered only energy their whole life and now suddenly they claim to be “multi-sector” with half their book in semis and consumer names, RUN. No matter what they tell you or how well-versed they sound in the sector. Biggest red flag by far is if they are over-intellectualizing everything and having a process that is correlated to how many hours you work. If the entire team has to be consistently working 100 hours every week for their process to work, it's not sustainable..."

  2. Private Credit Is Paradise - "You quickly realized private credit was the ultimate gatekeeper. Investment banks groveled at your feet, trying to syndicate loans. Private equity sponsors begged for your capital, pitching you deals with horrifically inflated projections while assuring you their 7.0x levered buyout was “completely de-risked.” In IB, you lived to please the MD. Here? The MDs lived to please you. In banking, you spent your life tweaking PowerPoints for someone else’s approval. In private credit, the PowerPoint came to you..."

  3. Like the Job but Am Tired - "Be honest with yourself. If you truly “enjoyed” the job or work, you wouldn’t be getting burned out. That’s not to say there aren’t demands for ridiculous hours or asks but generally if one really enjoys their work and is getting excited to hit the desk everyday (easier said than done) then the WLB isn’t really an issue..."

Top Discussions (contd.)

  1. I Lied on My CV and I Feel Like Shit - "Don't make it a habit to lie on your CV / resume but at the end of the day, I could not care less what GPA or rank you had. Can you do the job well? Do you have positive attitude? Do you learn from your mistakes? Are you a solid analyst to work with? I care about you doing the role we hired you for and if you help the team, I view that as a solid hire. I work with some analysts who went to top schools, killed their standardized tests and had better GPA than me -- yet when it comes to their work product / ethic and the day to day, they are worthless."

  2. Is UBS Really As Bad People Say on Here - "The bank is, I believe, in the top 10 in YTD M&A in the US and somewhere in the 10-12 range for LTM as of last week or so when I last checked Bloomberg and Deal Logic. Although it's declining, it is absurdly misleading and a sign of how frustrated some of these juniors are in the really toxic groups that anyone would ever suggest picking Nomura or TD over it."

  3. Getting Set Up in a MMHF/Pod - "Execution due diligence is a major impediment whenever changing shops. If you’re used to executing but now have to send to some centralized clearing desk that has conflicting priorities across the whole PM team , guarantee you’ll see at least 20 bps of slippage versus doing things yourself, maybe more depending on how quickly they can react to your new orders and how much diligence/care they provide to your orders. If you do all day VWAP orders or straight up limit orders then you’re fine, but if you’re trying to do something more fancy such as a price sensitive long/short spread trade, then you’re easily going to face big slippage. If you do “higher frequency” stuff in the range of intraday or quicker then you could face even bigger hurdles...."
