Weekly wrap up June 27
Hey WSO Monkey,
The first offer may open the door, but what comes next matters just as much. This week brings a complete IB internship recruiting guide, candid takes on restructuring and mid-career moves, a look at banker savings, and a broader discussion about building a long-term career in finance.

A Complete Guide to Summer Internship Recruiting - "I've been writing a guide for my alma mater’s business club on IB internship recruiting and figured I'd share it here for everyone’s benefit. I landed multiple offers and woulda saved a lot of time if all this info was in one place. Before recruiting starts. Actually, make the mental decision that you want to recruit for investment banking. That means dedicating most of your sophomore year to studying technicals, networking, and submitting applications. Definitely try to maximize your resume while you can. You need a good combination of GPA, finance clubs, and work experiences..."
Restructuring: Anti-Climactic Experience - "Now for the ego point, and I may get a bunch of MS for this, but it's not a big secret that IB is full of insecure hardos who desperately need to believe their job is rocket science. RX teams are tiny compared to M&A, so it’s easy for a few loud egos to overstate the complexity / make the role seem bigger than it is. Yes, interviews are hard but that’s artificial. When you have 500 sweaty undergrads fighting for 3 seats, you gotta ask stupidly niche questions just to weed them out. You’ll never use 80% of that prep-guide trivia on the desk. Also, the amount of resources available online makes it easy to seem super smart in the field, but that knowledge is mostly 1 inch deep."

For You Youngins (Under 40, Ideally Under 30), What Do You Want Out of Life? - "In my quest to not be the old man yelling at a cloud or lamenting the younger generation (when really those archetypal dudes just don't understand because they've never tried to understand), I want to know: what do you want out of life? No, I don't mean job titles, but broad brushes. if you had to paint a picture of your life in 5, 10, 15 years, what are you doing? What's your relationship status? family status? location? day-to-day life? interests outside of work? I'm being deliberately vague so please answer as stream of consciousness as you like. I'm also not going to offer any advice unless asked, I just want to learn where y'all are at because it's clear the worlds in which we grew up respectively, are quite different."
Mid-Level Career Freeze - "Maybe we’ve missed the point altogether. The grind never ends, does it? What if we took a backpack and up and left. Touched grass. Go find a surf break way outside our usual stomping grounds. Live minimally and frugally. Kick off some side projects. Maybe work as a barista or bartender locally. At this point, making $1 more means nothing to you, just looking to live life. But just like everyone else, I have my own set of excuses here, like friends, family, pets, mortgages. Up and leaving is a far-off daydream. If anyone is in this boat - stuck wondering what to do next, or maybe has already navigated through this period to greener pastures, I’d love to hear thoughts. Cheers."
IB Net Worth / Savings Check - "Interested in some other datapoints. Focused mostly on mid/senior-level IB in HCOL. 30 and have been in IB last 8 years and have $1.1M saved (401K, PTA, etc.). A small amount of college loans that have been paid off. No parental support since university."
